Dec 6: Waiting in Peace—Psalm 62:5-8

“For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him.” Psalm 62:5

As a teenager attending church with my family, my absolute favorite Sunday of the year was the first Sunday of Advent. There was something magical about the appearance of the Advent wreath. I looked forward to singing “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” with the contrast of the haunting minor verse and its majestic refrain. I loved the sense of expectancy that someone marvelous was to come. I considered it a sign of maturity that I had moved beyond seeing Advent as something to race through on the way to Christmas. I considered myself acquainted with waiting.

Last year taught me that I actually knew nothing about waiting. Being pregnant with Quinn was a beautiful experience. It was something for which Thomas and I waited for years. To say we identified more with Sarah and Abraham than Mary and Joseph would be an understatement. In our season of waiting for Quinn’s arrival, life went on, as busy and hectic as ever. Until everything stopped. Spending a month in the hospital forced me to stop and wait in a way nothing ever had before. Like Mary, I relinquished control and did the only thing left to do—trust in God’s goodness. This Advent, I hope to recall the sense of quiet and peace that comes from waiting in hope.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us this Advent to wait in peace for the arrival of the Christ Child, for you are our hope and salvation. Amen.
