Dec 3: Instruments of Peace—Micah 5: 2, 5

The prophet Micah wrote to the people of the divided kingdoms – Israel to the North and Judah to the South. Micah, like many prophets, warns of God’s judgement that will come because of unkindness, idolatry, injustices toward each other. I believe the prophets goal was to remind God’s people of His everlasting Love and to bring all back into relationship with Him. These scriptures are timeless because the prophet’s message still applies to us today!

Many in our country and world seem at odds with each other, as in the days of the Northern and Southern Kingdoms of Israel. Often kindness, civility and compassion are lacking today toward those who may not agree with us or are different in nationality, race, sexuality.

On a recent trip to Ireland we visited Northern Ireland. Our group stopped at a Peace Wall in Belfast, these barrier walls divide Catholic neighborhoods from Protestant neighborhoods. Over the years, many have come to write words of reconciliation on these walls, in hopes of promoting peace between these two groups. As I stood there writing my own message of peace for our broken world, I was filled with emotion and tears as I felt the pain of many who live in anger, resentment and strife.

Reading these words of Micah, the Belfast wall comes back to me and I remember Micah’s foretelling of Christ’s birth. The peace Christ offers is desperately needed in our world today! Our prince of peace calls us all to live lives of kindness, compassion and be at peace with one another.

Prayer: Lord, may we be instruments of that peace that breaks down barriers this Advent.
